Air freight is the rapid movement of goods via commercial aircraft, managed under the Customs Act, 1962 and Foreign Trade Development and Regulation (FTDR) Act, 1992. In India, air cargo operations are regulated by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). Air freight forwarding involves the consolidation, documentation, and clearance of shipments through designated air cargo complexes at airports such as Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi), Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad), and Kempegowda International Airport (Bangalore).
The air freight process encompasses customs declaration, bill of lading (BOL) or air waybill (AWB) generation, duty assessment, and release of goods. Licensed freight forwarders, approved by the DGFT and registered with the Regional Director of Customs, facilitate this process. The validity of air freight documentation under the Customs Act is typically 30 days from the date of arrival at the airport, after which penalties under Section 111 and Section 112 of the Customs Act may apply.
