A Bonded Warehouse License is an authorization issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) under the Customs Act, 1962 that permits businesses to store imported goods without paying customs duties and taxes until the goods are either re-exported or cleared for domestic consumption. This facility is governed by Chapter 9 of the Customs Act, 1962, and is administered through detailed regulations issued by the CBIC.
Bonded warehouses function as duty-free zones within Indian territory, allowing importers, manufacturers, and traders to defer duty payments while goods remain in bond. Once goods are removed from the bonded warehouse for domestic sale, applicable customs duties, Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST), and other levies become payable. The license grants the right to operate a secure facility under continuous Customs supervision.
