Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Registration is a mandatory environmental compliance framework under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 (as amended in 2021 and 2023) and the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016. EPR shifts the responsibility of managing end-of-life products from consumers and municipalities to manufacturers, importers, and brand owners. Any entity importing or manufacturing plastic products, packaging materials, or electronic goods into India must register with the designated Extended Producer Responsibility-Authorised Persons (EPR-APs) or directly with state Pollution Control Boards (PCBs).
The EPR mechanism ensures that producers establish collection, segregation, and recycling infrastructure to handle their products post-consumer use. Registration is the gateway to legally import or distribute such goods under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023-28 and the Customs Act, 1962. Without valid EPR Registration, customs authorities can detain or reject shipments at ports like JNPT, Mundra, Kandla, and others across India.
