The Export General Manifest (EGM) is a critical customs declaration document filed under the Customs Act 1962 that provides preliminary information about cargo intended for export from India. It serves as the initial manifest submitted to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) before the detailed bill of export is presented. The EGM acts as a bridge document between the freight forwarder, exporter, and customs authorities, enabling smooth processing of outbound shipments across all Indian ports and airports.
Filed through the Automated System for Customs Data (ASCD) or the Indian Customs EDI Gateway, the EGM contains vessel/flight details, shipper information, commodity descriptions, and port of discharge. This document is mandatory for all exports except those exempted under specific DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) notifications. The EGM must be filed within prescribed timeframes before the actual bill of export is presented to customs authorities.
