What is Weight Certificate?

A Weight Certificate is an official document issued by authorized weighing agencies that certifies the accurate weight of goods being exported or imported. In India, this certificate is mandated under the Customs Act, 1962 and relevant provisions of the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023-28 for certain commodity categories, particularly bulk goods, minerals, agricultural products, and items subject to quantity-based duty assessments. The certificate serves as conclusive evidence of the net and gross weight of consignments at the port of export or import, ensuring compliance with customs valuation and duty payment requirements.

Weight Certificates are issued by DGFT-approved weighing agencies and notified organizations such as Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) accredited laboratories, and certified third-party inspection agencies. These certificates are recognized by CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) and regional customs authorities across all major Indian ports, including container freight stations (CFS) and inland container depots (ICD).
