UN Packaging Certification is an international safety approval issued for packaging and containers used to transport dangerous goods across borders. Also known as Type Approval for Packaging, this certification verifies that packaging meets the stringent standards prescribed by the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN TDG). In India, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) regulate and issue these certifications for hazardous materials packaging.
Under the Customs Act, 1962 and the Hazardous and Noxious Substances Rules, Indian exporters must obtain UN Packaging Certification before shipping dangerous goods such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, batteries, flammable liquids, gases, oxidizers, and toxic substances. The certification mark (e.g., UN 4G, UN 1A, UN 3H) indicates the packaging type, material, and maximum capacity approved for specific hazardous categories.
