Is CIB Registration different from IEC?

CIB Registration and IEC (Importer-Exporter Code) are interconnected but distinct. CIB is the issuing authority under DGFT, while IEC is the 10-digit unique code assigned to your business entity. CIB Registration process results in IEC issuance. You cannot have IEC without CIB Registration, but CIB Registration status includes your IEC allocation.

How long does CIB Registration take?

Provisional IEC is issued within 24-48 hours of online application submission after automated verification. Final CIB Registration Certificate is issued within 30-45 days by registered post. Provisional IEC is legally valid for import-export operations immediately; you need not wait for the final certificate.

Can I apply for CIB Registration on behalf of my company?

Yes. An authorized representative (director, partner, company secretary, or designated signatory) can file the CIB Registration application on behalf of the company. The signatory must provide a notarized board resolution or partnership deed authorizing them to apply for IEC. However, the application must be submitted in the company's name with company PAN and GST.

What happens if my GST registration is cancelled?

If GST registration is cancelled, your IEC is automatically suspended by DGFT within 15 days. You cannot conduct any import-export operations with suspended IEC. To reactivate, you must restore your GST registration and file a CIB Reactivation request with DGFT. Reactivation takes 7-10 business days after GST restoration.

Do I need separate CIB Registration for import and export?

No. A single CIB Registration (single IEC) covers both import and export operations. If your business is restricted to only imports or only exports, you can mention this in the application, but it does not require separate registration. You can modify your business type later through CIB Amendment form.
