Legal Metrology refers to the mandatory system of standardization and verification of weights, measures, and weighing/measuring instruments used in trade, commerce, and industry. In India, this function is administered under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, which replaced the older Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976. Legal Metrology ensures that all commercial transactions involving measurement—whether by weight, volume, length, or other parameters—are conducted with accuracy and fairness, protecting both consumers and businesses from fraud and malpractice.
The scope of Legal Metrology covers pre-packaged commodities, weights and measures used for sale, industrial instruments, and electronic weighing machines. All manufacturers, importers, and traders dealing in commodities measured by weight or volume must ensure their products comply with prescribed standards and bear appropriate declarations on packaging. The system operates through a network of State Metrology Departments and Chief Metric Authorities appointed under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
