Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) is a government scheme that reimburses exporters for embedded taxes, duties, and levies paid during the manufacturing and distribution of exported goods. Introduced on January 1, 2021, under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023-28, RoDTEP replaced the earlier MEIS (Merchandise Exports from India Scheme) to provide more transparent and WTO-compliant export incentives. The scheme is administered by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, with support from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).
RoDTEP operates as a remission mechanism rather than a subsidy, allowing exporters to claim reimbursement for duties, taxes, and cesses that were levied but not exempted or credited during the production and distribution chain. The scheme covers a wide range of product categories with differentiated remission rates, typically ranging from 0.5% to 5% of FOB (Free on Board) value, depending on the product classification and export destination.
