The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a European Union regulatory framework designed to prevent carbon leakage by imposing a carbon price on imports of selected goods into the EU. As an Indian exporter, CBAM compliance involves demonstrating the embedded emissions in your products and obtaining CBAM certificates that certify the carbon content of goods destined for EU markets. Under the CBAM framework, which became operational in October 2023 with a transitional reporting phase (2023-2025) followed by full implementation from 2026, Indian manufacturers and exporters must report quarterly on the carbon intensity of their exports in sectors including cement, steel, aluminum, fertilizers, and electricity.
CBAM compliance operates alongside existing EU Environmental policies and the Emissions Trading System (ETS). Indian exporters can benefit from carbon credit mechanisms in their home country—such as those available under the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)—which can offset CBAM liabilities when transitioning to full compliance by 2026.
