SEZ Developer Approval is an authorization granted by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) to entities seeking to develop, operate, or manage a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in India. Under the Special Economic Zones Act, 2005, and the SEZ Rules, 2006, any private or public sector entity must obtain formal approval before establishing an SEZ in India or any other notified location across India.
This approval certifies that the applicant meets all prescribed criteria for zone development, infrastructure capability, financial stability, and regulatory compliance. SEZ Developer Approval is distinct from SEZ Unit Approval—while developer approval authorizes zone establishment, unit approval allows individual businesses to operate within the zone and avail tax and customs benefits.
