RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a European Union directive (2011/65/EU, amended by 2015/863/EU) that restricts the use of ten hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. These substances include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), along with four phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIBP) added under the 2015 amendment.
For Indian exporters, RoHS compliance certification demonstrates that exported electrical and electronic products meet EU environmental and safety standards. This certification is not mandatory under Indian law but is a market access requirement for selling in EU member states and countries that have adopted equivalent standards. The compliance covers a broad range of products including consumer electronics, industrial equipment, telecommunications devices, and IT hardware.
