A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), now formally termed Safety Data Sheet (SDS) under international standards, is a comprehensive document that provides critical information about the hazardous properties, handling procedures, and emergency measures for chemical substances and mixtures. For Indian exporters, MSDS compliance is essential when shipping chemicals, pharmaceuticals, hazardous materials, and industrial products across international borders under the Customs Act 1962 and guidelines issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
The MSDS must detail physical and chemical properties, toxicological data, environmental hazards, safe handling practices, storage requirements, disposal methods, and first-aid measures. It serves as a critical communication tool between manufacturers, exporters, importers, and end-users, ensuring workplace safety and regulatory compliance throughout the supply chain. Under the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992 (FTDR Act), Indian exporters must provide accurate MSDS documentation to meet importing country regulations and international standards like GHS (Globally Harmonized System).
